Our Favorite Pet-Friendly Places in Boston & Newport

By Jessica Simon

It is officially summer here in New England which means lots of opportunities to enjoy the sunshine and socialize with your pup. We love seeing more locations become dog-friendly in the warmer-weather months. If you are looking for the best places in the area to bring your beloved pooch, we’ve got you covered!

Here is a round-up of our top ten pet-friendly hospitality establishments around Boston and Newport:

Hotels

We love how the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston incorporates its iconic canine ambassador into its overall image. Cori Copley, the property’s third resident dog, will greet you as you arrive at the hotel lobby with a tail wag and a smile. Pets of all sizes are welcome in the hotel!

For an all-around pup-approved stay, visit Paws on Pelham, a dog-friendly inn with in-room dog beds and a “rufftop” deck located steps from downtown Newport. You might even see a CE furry friend here, since there are eight office pups “on staff” between both the Boston and Newport teams.

Yappier Hour at the Liberty Hotel offers a place for hotel guests and locals alike to mix & mingle with their doggies every Wednesday from May to October starting at 5:30 pm. Themed evenings keep the crowds coming, especially the last one of the season, which is Halloween-themed – Jessica’s dog Kishke’s favorite holiday.

Beer Gardens

You might see Alyson’s fur baby Indy this summer at one of Trillium’s beer gardens on the Greenway and Boston Common, as well as on the patios of the Fort Point and Fenway-area taprooms. The vibe is chill, and the pints are top-notch, perfect for showing off your pup.

O’Brien’s in Newport is a staple for dogs and humans to come together and enjoy some good summertime fun. Here, you are likely to see Samantha’s dog Goonie sunning himself while enjoying a treat from their curated dog menu.

Off the Beaten Path

Harvard Arboretum, the oldest public arboretum in North America, is a hidden gem. The Jamaica Plain spot offers 265 acres of trees, flowers, and unique plants for you and your pup to explore. Don’t forget to stop by the Polka Dog Bakery nearby to give them a well-deserved treat on your way home!

Newport Polo allows for a “see and be seen” experience like none other. Bring your pooch to a match on a Saturday in the summer and enjoy a preppy picnic soiree among Newport’s elite.

Forty-five minutes North of Boston, the historic town of Salem is one of the most dog-friendly places in New England. Well-behaved dogs can join their humans on some of Salem’s walking tours and, if small enough, can join the fun at the Witch Museum. Dogs can even ride the trolley & harbor cruise tours! Head to Far from the Tree for a post-outing beverage with your dog, who will be warmly welcomed and treated like royalty.

New & Noteworthy

Park-9 is Boston’s only off-leash dog park, which features a doggie playground unique to New England. In addition to a plethora of dog-friendly amenities, humans can enjoy craft cocktails at the huge outdoor bar and grub from its resident food truck. They even have dog beers on their special Fido-forward menu. This fun spot is Molly-approved (Courtney’s rescue dog)!

Lick Painting events around Boston are popping up all over the area on pet-friendly patios at pubs such as Dorchester Brewing Co. and Mayflower Brewing in Plymouth. Dogs can create their own masterpieces using their tongue and non-toxic pet-friendly paints. Bring your pup and allow them to unleash their inner Paw-Caso while experiencing a night out.
