Q: Did you always see yourself working in hospitality? Did you have any other dream jobs growing up?

A: I had thought about it in High School, but in South Africa at the time, it wasn’t a very realistic career path for me. I knew that I wanted to be in a creative industry, and I had applied to one of the top fashion schools in South Africa, but decided last minute that it didn’t feel right for me. That’s when my mom directed me towards au pairing in the USA, which was ultimately a life-changing decision. Moving here gave me the opportunity to explore experiences in the events industry.

Q: What educational or work experiences led you to want to work in events?

A: I was always involved in the events committees at school, helping to plan fundraisers, fashion shows, and proms. I enjoyed being part of the team and witnessing our efforts come together and pay off.

At home, my mom always went the extra mile to make people feel special and welcomed. Something as simple as setting the table and adding a vase of fresh flowers when people come over can make a big difference. I loved assisting my mom with birthday celebrations and family functions. At the time, I didn’t realize that all of this would lead me to the events industry. Looking back, it’s clear that the foundation was laid for me, especially since my late grandmother was a caterer. I am grateful to have been able to witness her efforts and passion for people, food, and events.

Q: What is something people might not know about you?

A: I went to a German International High School in Johannesburg South Africa, so I speak a little German and Afrikaans. Since my maternal Grandfather is German, I also carry a German passport.

Q: What is something you are proud to have accomplished in your career so far or something you are looking forward to accomplishing?

A: I am proud of myself for committing to studying remotely for my bachelor's degree in 2020. Being a distance learner, 7,000 miles away from my family, and working full time to take care of myself over the past few years has been a tough challenge, but I have proved my resiliency, good nature, and courage. I am proud to say I will graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce in management marketing in the spring of 2025.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant or activity in Boston?

A: I love Caffe Vittoria, it is my favorite post-dinner dessert spot. My go-to order is a classic cannoli with a cappuccino which is topped with a heavy sprinkle of cocoa powder. They also have a killer espresso martini.

Q: Where do you think is the best view of Boston?

A: The best view of Boston might just be from Castle Island in Southie. Whether it be sunrise or sunset or anything in between, the combination of the harbor, skyline, and local charm makes it a view I never get tired of.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant or activity in Boston?

A: My favorite restaurant in Boston has to be Bricco. Their cosmopolitans and burrata are unmatched in my opinion. Afterward, I love wandering the streets of The North End in search of the perfect cannoli to end the night. My grandfather, originally from Benevento, Italy, would be so proud of his proper Italian granddaughter!

Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given, event related or not?

A: My grandfather has repeatedly said this to me throughout my life, it’s a German saying that goes: “Ohne Fleiss Kein Preis,” which means nothing worthwhile comes easy, or rather without effort, there is no triumph. This motivates me to keep putting my best effort into everything I do because one will reap no rewards if one doesn’t put in the work. I am so thankful my Opa taught me this from an early age.

Q: Outside of work hours, what is something you enjoy doing?

A: I enjoy spending time outside going for a hike or playing sports in the park. I am a health and wellness enthusiast so I love making healthy seasonal recipes, trying new exercise classes, getting outside, and moving my body in any way. I especially enjoy yoga flows - I am working towards attaining my 200 hr. Yoga Teacher Training Certification by 2025 – and in the winter I love skiing. However, with all that said, I have the biggest sweet tooth. I am an avid baker, and I think about dessert a lot!
